The mystery surrounding a set of massive polar bear tracks discovered on Langjökull has been solved. Langjökull stands as Iceland's second-largest ice cap, with ice up to 1,900 feet thick and the highest point reaching approximately 4,757 feet above sea level. The tracks raised concerns among locals and prompted a swift investigation by the Icelandic Coast Guard. It turned out to be the result of a peculiar incident involving Colorado ski mountaineer Jon Kedrowski.

The saga began when a hunter reported tracks that were seemingly large enough to suggest a polar bear had ventured across the Langjökull ice cap. The tracks were located 80km from the coast of Langjökull. Polar bears are rarely seen in Iceland. Authorities took immediate action due to the potential dangers associated with these creatures. The Icelandic Coast Guard was well aware of the increasing incidents of polar bear attacks globally, so they mobilized quickly to investigate the sighting. Senior police officer Ásmundur Kristinn Ásmundsson stated that these animals can travel long distances and that they take all such reports seriously.

On Facebook, local guide Arngrímur Hermannsson disclosed that Jon Kedrowski, not a polar bear, was the one who left the tracks, revealing the truth. The experienced ski mountaineer had switched to oversized cold boots due to painful blisters caused by rented skiing shoes. He was practicing for an upcoming cross-country skiing trip to Antarctica. Hermannsson explained that Jon got hurt using rented skiing shoes. After two days, he packed up his shoes and put on huge cold boots like they wear in the Antarctic when camping.

Kedrowski's oversized boots left tracks that looked like massive polar bear tracks. His oversized boots were the culprit behind the polar-bear-sized tracks on the glacier. With this discovery, Icelanders and the local seal population breathed a sigh of relief.

Hermannsson humorously cautioned that Coloradans might want to stay alert as Kedrowski had returned to Colorado, leaving Iceland with a whimsical connection to polar bears. The event serves as a reminder of the unexpected twists that can occur in the dynamic landscapes of Iceland, even for experienced adventurers like Jon Kedrowski.
